The pyramids

Building of the pyramids were a series of experiments (by the aliens?). U can see the obvious evolution from the pictures below...

At the prototype 'step pyramid' with my friend Dr. Mohamed, a geriatrician in Egypt.

Then they tried to build a real smooth pyramid without steps but oooops... too ambitious and had to change to a less steep angle, resulting in this 'curved pyramid'.

Yeah they finally succeeded in building a real pyramid - the Red Pyramid, albeit at an angle which is not very steep, resulting in a not-so-tall pyramid.

Eventually the optimal angle to build a pyramid which is straight and tall yet won't collapse was discovered. These are the three main pyramids at the Giza Plateau.

Guard.

Camel ride!

Ancient writing - hieroglyphs.

Pyramid of Khufu.

Pyramid of Khafre.

Pyramid of Menkaure.

A travelogue of Egypt - March 2008

It's been a year since our visit to Egypt. It was actually our honeymoon trip.

"Honeymoon? In Egypt??"

Yeah that was the reaction of many of our friends and relatives when they came to know that we're going to Egypt for honeymoon. Why not Bali, Paris, the Carribeans, Maldives, or even China? Well, it's because of our interest in human civilisation and history I guess. This place with the only real Wonder of the World had been on our 'must go places' list so off we went!

Will put up some old photos when we were there starting tomorrow. It'll be a black & white series, so this is gonna be the only coloured photo! Do u like the very blue sky without clouds?

Not me!

(photo from Flickr)

Another rather funny incident in relation to my unique surname.

One day, 2 of my colleagues in the same dearptment were talking to each other...

Dr. B: "Yew la."
Dr. A: "Yes ah? No la, I don think so."
Dr. B: "Yeah lah, Yew on call."

Taiwan trip 7-17 Feb 2009, Part 23 (Tzu Chi Hospital, Xin Dian)

Sah's uncle is a consultant in the Tzu Chi Hospital in Xin Dian, so we allocated a morning to visit the hospital with him.

The hospital building.

The life-guarding cornerstone - Tzu Chi hospitals are well known for its emphasis on humanity and caring values apart from scientific medical excellence.

The new edition of the "Buddha attending to the sick" drawing.

Nurses and doctors are depicted as angels on the ceiling of the main lobby.

Volunteer pianist entertaining the sick.

Despite being a Buddhist hospital, it respects the needs of patients of all religions, and there's no projecting of prayers of a particular religion through the loudspeaker every morning!!

Very cosy and homely space in the palliative ward for the terminally ill patients and family members.

Counselling room.

There's an outdoor garden for almost every floor.

Waiting space for free connecting buses to main MRT and bus stations.

人醫就是良醫;

With Sah's uncle.

Saw this chap near the hospital exit who came out for a smoke. See the iv drip and drip stand he was carrying? :D

Suckers

At the place where we had the department family day, there was this special therapy that they offer to those who are interested in it...

Introducing to you our old friend......

The leeches!!

To be more straightforward, they're a bunch of SUCKERS.

I said they're "old friends" not without a reason - leech therapy has been used as early as 3,500 years ago by the ancient Egyptians. And people have been trying to revive this ancient method of therapy and have been doing researches to ascertain its effectiveness in various conditions and its safety of use. Even the FDA have approved its use for certain conditions!

Now this fat obese lady is undergoing leech therapy...

Sucker...

More suckers...

And apparently she finds the lovely little things helped her quite a bit in relieving her osteoarthritis pain. I took the opportunity to ask the man in charged about using leech therapy if one can't get his 'batang' up. (not that i need it, mind u! :D)

"Definitely!" he said with a glow on his face, "just put the leech at the root of ur 'batang', and it's damn effective!"

Anyone wanna have a try? Heheh!

The leeches post feeding. Big fat suckers!

"F" you!

Skypaul wrote an entry about outdated lame jokes. That triggered an old thought of mine. If I'd pick an English name for myself, I'd definitely pick one which starts with the letter 'F', and I'll make a nametag which look exactly like above. How bout that - Dr. F Yew! Cool eh?!
